What are Polynucleotides?
As expected in my Wigan clinic the treatment that continues to grow in demand is Polynucleotide injection. I can see why – the Polynucleotide benefits to this treatment consistently outperform more traditional aesthetic treatments.
Kim K discussed it on the Kardashians. Olivia Atwood mentioned it on her podcast. As a result, interest is growing from their glowing reviews of polynucleotide benefits!
Polynucleotides are long chains of nucleotides, forming the building blocks of DNA and RNA. Sounds complicated right? However all you need to know is in aesthetics, this treatments uses fish DNA to repair and regenerate the skin.
Is this magic – no its science at its best!
Scientists take polynucleotides from salmon or trout sperm but don’t let that put you off! They purify the DNA in to a sterile injectable form safe for use in aesthetics.
When injected into the skin, this DNA acts as a biostimulator. In other words, it helps your body grow new skin cells. It helps repair and regenerate skin at a cellular level improving your skin health and quality from within.
How Polynucleotide Injections work?
It might sound complicated but it’s incredibly simple. The body absorbs this subdermal injection and uses it as building blocks for new skin cells. This then works with your body to regenerate your skin in three ways:
- Polynucleotides stimulate collagen and elastin the skin’s structure building blocks. This production then improves the skin’s elasticity and texture.
- Polynucleotides when injected into the skin act as antioxidants. This is important because daily exposure to harmful pollutants and chemicals affects the skin. This protective property of polynucleotides acts by reducing inflammation and free radicals.
- Like dermal fillers polynucleotide treatment enhance skin hydration by attracting water molecules. Unlike dermal filler, it will not cause water to pool under the skin. It does not block lymphatic drainage or attract too much water. So no puffy pillow face often seen by over use of dermal fillers.
Polynucleotide Benefits
I have been offering this treatment at my Wigan clinic since the start of the year. What surprises me the most are the long-term benefits for the skin, which appear 6 to 8 months later. Here are some of the long term benefits using polynucleotide skin booster.
Improves Skin Elasticity and Texture
As previously mentioned the most profound long term benefit is polynucleotide skin booster properties. The stimulation of regenerating lost skin cells especially collagen and elastin enhances skin firmness, smooths fine lines, and wrinkles.
I have noticed better skin quality in my clinic. Patients return months later for other beauty treatments look like they have had a daily glass facial.
Hydration and Radiance
One of the most impressive polynucleotide benefits is the hydration properties. No secret exists that as we age, skin loses hydration, appearing more tissue-like.
Injecting polynucleotides in the skin boosts skin hydration, promoting a youthful, glowing appearance. It offers this benefit without blocking your face’s natural lymphatic system. It also avoids becoming too hydrophilic, which can cause a puffy, unnatural look from too many fillers.
Regeneration and Healing
The biggest improvement Ive seen with polynucleotide benefits is with patients that have extremely damaged skin. An example is a patient with sun damage on her chest resulting in hyperpigmentation and dry texture. Following a course of three treatments the improvements were substantial.
Polynucleotide treatment is exceptionally effective for scarring, sun damage, and photoaging.

Anti-inflammatory Properties
As mentioned previously the results in my clinic with patients with rosacea speak for themselves. The polynucleotide side effect of reducing redness and soothes irritated skin is a game changer in aesthetics.
Polynucleotide Benefits - Clinical Evidence
The origins of polynucleotide treatment was in wound healing in medicine. The benefits in skin remodelling and rejuvenation lead to the aesthetics industry utilising its benefits for aesthetic purposes.
Studies show positive results in skin rejuvenation, with improvements in collagen production and skin thickness. Specifically the evidence behind the collagen boosting properties is encouraging compared to other treatments.
Researchers have observed that results last from six months to two years, depending on treatment frequency and individual factors. In clinic i’ve seen patients skin tone and texture to continue to improve from three to six months plus – much to my suprise.
Who Can Benefit?
Honestly, anyone who has noticed signs of skin aging or is dealing with an inflammatory skin condition like rosacea. Its an ideal treatment for patient sin their late 30’s, 40’s and beyond for combating the signs of ageing, improve skin quality.
Even younger patients benefit from treating or controlling conditions like acne scars and pigmentation from sun damage.
Its a treatment that is suitable for face, neck, décolletage, and hands. So can be used in any area that is showing signs of skin damage or ageing. I have treated many patients décolletage successfully areas often forgotten about buy more traditional aesthetic treatments.
Comparison with Profhilo
Many people ask me about the difference between polynucleotide treatment and Profhilo. This is one of the most common questions I get in my clinic. Both treatments boost hydration and skin quality, but polynucleotides offer cellular regeneration benefits compared to Profhilo shorter term effects of hydration and collagen production.
Both treatments, however, have an short downtime, with any injection point bumps only lasting 24 hours. Like with any injectable there is a small risk of bruising.
Polynucleotides are particularly effective in areas like the under-eye and for deeper skin healing. This is an aesthetics game changer as tear trough filler is high risk and not suitable for many patients. The benefits of Polynucleotide for under the eyes include hydration and better skin texture. It does this without causing hydrophilic eye bags, which can happen with tear trough filler.
Polynucleotide Treatment Side Effects
Common side effects are mild swelling, small bumps visible for 24 hrs.
Bruising, I did have a particularly bad bruise with and under eye treatment recently but the long term results outweigh the short term bruise. Redness like and injectable any damage to the skin surface will cause redness.
Extremely rare are allergic reactions, especially in those allergic to fish. Like with any treatment I will not proceed until I have had a full medical consultation with my patients.
How Long Do Polynucleotides Take To Work?
I recommend to get the best long term results a course of three treatments 2-4 weeks apart. You will see some of the benefits of polynucleotides after the first treatment.
This treatment helps your body regenerate skin cells. The longer-term results may take 3 to 6 months to appear. Everybody is unique and therefore the best results will vary in time for every individual.
