What is lip augmentation and how does it work?

Lip augmentation, also known as lip enhancement surgery, is a non-surgical procedure which is primarily designed to restore shape, increase volume and add projection to the body and border of the lips. This procedure involves the injection of a dermal filler into the lip, usually made of the natural substance hyaluronic acid, which supports and shapes the structure of your lip.

The effects of one round of lip augmentation typically last around six months. After that, more injections are needed to keep up the volume of your lips.

What are the different types of lip augmentation treatments?

Lip augmentation treatments typically involve the use of dermal fillers, most commonly those made from hyaluronic acid, to enhance the shape, volume, and symmetry of the lips.

What should I expect during and after the lip augmentation procedure?

During a lip augmentation procedure with dermal fillers, a topical anesthetic is often applied to minimize discomfort. The filler is then carefully injected into specific areas of the lips to achieve the desired shape and volume. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes. After the treatment, you may experience some swelling, redness, and bruising, which usually subsides within a few days. Results are immediate, but it may take up to two weeks for the final appearance to settle as the swelling decreases. It's important to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by your practitioner to ensure the best outcome.

For 24 hours after treatment, we also advise that patients avoid touching the treated area and avoid drugs such as alcohol, aspirin or ibuprofen as these can increase the risk of bruising and swelling.

What are the potential risks and complications of lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation is generally safe, especially when performed by an experienced practitioner. However, there are potential risks and complications, including temporary swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at the injection site. In rare cases, more serious complications can occur, such as allergic reactions, infection, lumps, asymmetry, or vascular issues if the filler is injected into a blood vessel. It's crucial to discuss these risks with your provider before undergoing the procedure and to choose a qualified and experienced practitioner to minimize potential complications. If any issues arise after the treatment, contact your provider immediately for assessment and appropriate management.
